Moving to Portugal? Set Up Your Mail Before You Arrive

Portugal's bureaucracy has a chicken-and-egg problem baked in: several things you need to start a life here want a Portuguese address, and the address usually comes last. Banks post cards and PINs, Finanças posts passwords and notices, utilities post contracts, and until you have signed a lease, none of it has anywhere to land. Here is how to sequence it so the paperwork is waiting for you instead of the other way around.

What actually needs an address early

• NIF (tax number): the very first document, needed for almost everything else. Non-residents get it with a foreign address (often via a fiscal representative or an online NIF service), but once processes start, Finanças writes to you on paper more often than you would expect.
• Bank account: Portuguese banks post debit cards and PIN codes separately, by physical mail, to a Portuguese address in most cases.
• Utilities and telecoms: contracts and final bills arrive on paper surprisingly often.
• AIMA / visa processes: official notifications about residence processes can arrive by registered letter, with deadlines attached.
• Health system, Segurança Social, driving licence exchange: all letter-writers.

The sequence that works

2. NIF and bank: open the processes with your address in place; cards and codes arrive somewhere that scans them to your inbox the day they land.

Common questions

Can I really activate before arriving? Yes: subscription, mandate and identity verification (Stripe Identity: photo of your passport + selfie) all happen online. Your address is issued the same business day.

Will banks accept it? It is a real street address, valid for correspondence. Institutions with residency requirements may ask for proof of your residential address separately; the mailbox solves where the paper lands, not residency itself.
